Friendsgiving Merrymas 2013

friendsgiving 2013

Yesterday afternoon we gathered with some friends to do a massive amount of cooking and have our annual expat Thanksgiving celebration. My fellow American in Sussex, the ever-gracious Jess, and I teamed together to make all the goods (with Jon in charge of the turkey, as he loves to be) and since Jess has a wee 7 week old baby to take care of, I felt pretty bad about making a huge mess of her kitchen….but she asked me to! We had all the usual suspects-green bean casserole, onion gravy, brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes (and roasted ones too, since English people are far more fond of the root veg when roasted….weird), stuffing, and even corn on the cob. Oh and pigs in blankets, cranberry jalapeno cream cheese dip, tons of cheeses and crackers…..and wine. So much wine. And pie! Half of our guests had never had pumpkin pie before, and they seemed to enjoy it. ¬†You never know with English folk. Generally speaking, cover it in cream and they’ll go for it. I plan on making another and taking it to work on Monday to broaden the horizons of my coworkers.

After the meal we sat around the table enjoying wine and a few spirited rounds of apples to apples while passing around the gorgeous baby (who is meant to remain, as of now, invisible to the internet, which is a real downer for you folks at home because she is a PEACH).

And ladies! With my eyes closed, because that’s what happens.

It was a good night, with good friends. Once again, I’m not sure where we’ll be at this time next year and while I hope to eventually make it back to my mom’s couch one of these days, this is an equally fabulous way to spend Thanksgiving, and a newish tradition that I’m really happy to see continue on year after year. And next year Jon and I could host, in our very own home, which would be a real treat! Feeling grateful for these times, with these people. And also, pie. Of course, pie.
