Saturday night Jon and I went out into the early evening for a hot date that consisted of some light holiday shopping for my work secret Santa, followed by dinner and drinks, and finished with the main event of the evening-a night with the Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus!
We settled on dinner at a recently opened diner/bar hybrid on the seafront that we’d both heard good things about from work colleagues. The New Club had some definite NYC vibes (I think at least one of the owners may be American) and we were not disappointed. We both had burgers and I scoffed a delightfully delicious spiced pear bellini. I already want to go back and see what else they have to offer.
After dinner it was back into town and to the Brighton Dome for the main event! It was a campy, glittery evening of Christmas carols, show tunes, innuendo and penis jokes. Oh, and frequent appearances by beautiful man dancers. And we had great seats! I was surprised by the…..boring middle-aged-ness….. of the crowd, as it looked like virtually any concert could have been going on, and not a festive gay spectacular. But then Jon reminded me that we are in Brighton, the gay capital of England, so really-what did I expect? It wasn’t ultra-camp though, and there were lots of beautiful, seasonal songs interspersed with fun skits and pop hits, with a few fabulous drag queens in the foyer collecting money for charity. It was a really fun night, and we’ll probably go next year too.
After the show we went to one of our favorite hole-in-the-wall bars for a nightcap before catching the last train back up to Haywards Heath. Next weekend is jam-packed, with a party to attend on Friday night, and big plans to spend all of Saturday in London, which I’m really looking forward to! Nothing like London town during the holiday season…
